Beijing is the capital of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The Chinese characters ‘北京‘ literally mean Northern Capital. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world and one which is steeped in history as well as modern architecture.

Population: 21.5 million (aprox)

Weather: Hot dry summers and bitter cold winters. Spring and Autumn are very short.

Popular food: Peking Duck

Popular districts: Gulou, Sanlitun , Tiananmen - Qianmen -Dashilar, Liangmaqiao, Wudaokou, Wangjing, CBD, 798

Things to do: The Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, The Temple Of Heaven, The Pearl Market, The Summer Palace, 798 Art District, Explore the Hutongs, Lost Plate Food Tour, The National Stadium (The Birds Nest), CCTV Tower.

Getting around: Beijing is really easy to navigate, it has an extensive public transport system which is also cheap. Be warned though distances between places are usually longer than expected.

Rent: Room in a shared house ¥4-8,000. One bedroom ¥6.5-12,000

Hostel: ¥100-500

Hotel: ¥300+
